The COVID-19 pandemic is already having a serious impact on us all – both at home and in the workplace – and will affect every sector of the Guam economy. Calvo Fisher & Jacob has created a Coronavirus Task Force and is closely monitoring the global threat of COVID-19 in order to provide up-to-date practical information to individuals and businesses about the wide range of legal and other issues arising from the pandemic.

CFJ Helps UC Retirees Who Worked at Lawrence Livermore Lab Reach $84 Million Settlement with University of California Over Termination of UC Medical Benefits

Kathy Fisher, Rodney Jacob, Maya Maravilla and Alex Freeman of Calvo Fisher & Jacob were part of the legal team for the University of California retirees from Lawrence Livermore Labs who announced the settlement of their case against University of California in December 2019.  The retiree's press release is set out below.

Governor Appoints CFJ's Dana Gutierrez to Serve as Judge on Guam Superior Court

Everyone at CFJ is very proud of our own Dana Gutierrez who was appointed to the Guam Superior Court bench on November 19, 2019 by Governor Lou Leon Guerrero.  

At the ceremony announcing Dana's appointment, the Governor said, "Attorney Dana Gutierrez possesses the judicial temperament, that was very crucial requirement for me, ethical grounding, intelligence, education, courage and integrity."

CFJ's Jacob Speaks to College-Bound Guam Students About Program That Reduces Tuition Costs

CFJ's Rodney Jacob is a Commissioner of WICHE - the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education.  As Guam's representative of WICHE, Rod recently spoke to a group of Guam high school students about a WICHE program called the Western Undergraduate Exchange which makes college in Hawaii or on the mainland more affordable for Guam students.  In the 2018-2019 period, 78 Guam undergraduates paid 150% or less of in-state rates resulting in a savings of $1.1 million.  Guam residents have saved

Win for GIAA in Guam Supreme Court in Sunshine Act Dispute with DFS

On June 12, 2019 the Guam Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport Authority, Guam (“GIAA”) in its ongoing dispute with DFS Guam L.P. clarifying issues around the Open Government Law (OGL) and the Sunshine Reform Act of 1999 (Sunshine Act) by ruling that under the Sunshine Act a Guam public agency is permitted to withhold executive session transcripts when they pertain to ongoing litigation even if not sealed under the OGL. CFJ's Kathy Fisher and Genevieve Rapadas argued the case before the Supreme Court.

Ninth Circuit Rules for Guam Airport in Ancestral Lands Case

On March 1, 2019 the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the Guam International Airport Authority (GIAA) in a case brought by Vicente Crawford seeking compensation for the Airport's use of ancestral lands.  CFJ represented both GIAA and GIAA Board Chair Ricardo Duenas in the case and all claims were dismissed against both parties.  CFJ's Genevieve Rapadas had argued the case on behalf of GIAA and Chairman Duenas at the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco on November 15, 2018.  See our post

CFJ's Gutierrez Appointed to Guam Solid Waste Authority Board

Dana Gutierrez, of counsel at Calvo Fisher & Jacob, has been appointed by Governor Lourdes A. Leon Guerrero to the board of the Guam Solid Waste Authority.  Dana is the former Director of Policy, Planning and Community Relations at the Judiciary of Guam, and previously served as legal counsel and executive assistant to the President of the University of Guam.
